Values and beliefs about education

building dreams,
one student at a time

I have been a teacher for the last 17 years since 1998. After my experiences at JC and Secondary School, I have a broader picture of the education of teenagers in Singapore. I have taught outstanding as well as struggling students. Both groups of students have their hopes and aspirations. While students’ aspirations may be similar, the latter faces greater difficulty in achieving them. I see my role as helping my students discover and achieve their aspirations, or “dreams” in my terms.
I believe strongly that dreams are dreamt of so that they may come true. In that spirit, I see myself as a teacher who help students build their dreams and transforms them into reality. I see myself as helping students to achieve their fullest potential in whatever education programmes that I am involved in. Whenever I carry out a programme, I always ask myself what will my students benefit from it in terms of educational opportunities, learning outcomes, and most important of all, moral values.

I will go the extra mile to help students transform their “dreams” into reality. When I was in CJC, I helped a total of 946 students achieve an NYAA award, with the majority achieving the Gold award, the pinnacle of student leadership and character development. Since I joined SST, I have encouraged and mentored students in participating in Science and Engineering competitions, culminating in the A*STAR Science Award and the Young Engineers Award, the pinnacle of Science and Engineering education at the Secondary School level. It is with the focus on developing my students to the best of my abilities that I have carried out my assigned duties and charted my own professional development.
