Artefact 4 - Engineering Design Process

In 2014, I have embarked on a challenging but fulfilling course that could transform the learning experience for our students. I am exploring the possibility of teaching Engineering in the Secondary School curriculum. Although there are no specific Engineering courses that are taught as a separate subject, I am implementing the Engineering Design process and its related tools in the following areas:

Basic Arduino class

Teaching the basic operation of the Arduino board. I have conducted workshops for my Science Talent Development Programme students. These students in turn, will train other students about the Arduino board.

Engineering Design Process using the Mouse Trap Car

As part of the Sec 3 Performance Task in Physics, the Mouse Trap Vehicle (MTV) is used as a platform to teach the Engineering Design process (EDP). Students are given 5 weeks to complete a performance task whereby they apply the principles of the EDP to build a MTV.

Advanced Projects using the EDP and Arduino

The Arduino, together with other devices, can be assembled together to form a kinetic art piece. The project "SST SuperTree" was mentored by me and given to the school as a 2013-graduating cohort gift to the school.

The project was showcased during the PM visit to SST on 3 April 2014.
