International Space Challenge: Best Mentor Award

I achieved the best mentor award for the International Space Challenge.

The biggest takeaway was that I got the certificate from Professor Lui Pao Chuen,

Lui Pao Chuen is a military scientist who has played a pivotal role in Singaporean national development.  This includes his roles as: Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Singapore Space and Technology Association (SSTA);[1] Advisor at the Ministry of National Development (MND);[2] Senate Member at the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS);[3] Board of Trustee Member of the Singapore University Technology and Design (SUTD)[4] and Advisor of the National Research Foundation at the Prime Minister's Office.

Third Shaw-IAU Workshop on Astronomy for Education (12-15 Oct 2021)

My first presentation in the International Astronomy Union Workshop as a NAEC member.

NAEC stands for National Astronomy Education Coordinator.

The topic of my presentation was:

There are different paths into astronomy education. Some of us are school teachers and educators. Others are astronomers, whether professional or amateur. Typically, that means that most of us have formal training in some of the areas important for astronomy education, but not in all areas. And of course, both the content and the methods of astronomy education itself are evolving over time. Plus, it’s fun to learn about new things, but also to revisit the basics!

This year’s Shaw-IAU Workshop on Astronomy for Education is all about opportunities for everybody who is active in astronomy education, whether as a practitioner or an education researcher, to go back to the basics. What are the things that, in an ideal world, all of us should know? Which new developments, effective teaching methods, evaluation techniques, and which aspects of astronomy education research should all of us be aware of?

So this year’s workshop is less about speakers presenting their own work and projects, but about speakers telling participants what they think everybody should know about a particular aspect of astronomy education.

The 3rd Shaw-IAU Workshop will be a fully online experience with pre-recorded talks and live discussions, using the Hopin platform.

IPS - Crescendas Medal and Prize for Outstanding Physics Teacher (Secondary Schools)

On 21 Dec 2020, I received the award for the year ending 2019 at NUS-Yale University Auditorium 2.

I am reminded that I have to contribute to the Physics landscape in Singapore through Research, Education and Outreach.

Chief Scientist of NASA, Dr James Green

I am standinng next to a Giant.

Associate Professor Dennis Hugh Murphy (1931-2020)

I had the honour to work as his research assistant for a period of 3 holidays (12 months) during my university years (1993-1995). The experience laid the foundation for the development of my curiosity and passion for Science.

The jungle is the classroom. We will learn about Behavioural Science, Geography, Dragonflies, and the Natural Environment in Singapore.

We discovered the largest tree in Singapore, threaded through the Nee Soon freshwater swamp, discovered the underground tunnel in Macritchie, mapped out the remnants of the Shinto Shrine in Singapore, surveyed almost every stream in the Nature Reserves, and shared our views of life.

I marvelled at the fact that this huge-sized guy could be so interested in small insects such as dragonflies, damselflies, ants and termites. And I learnt how to be kind to insects big or small.

He bothered to read what I have written about the Mathematical Modelling of the stream systems in Macritchie and Nee Soon swamp forests, and discussed issues related to behavioural science in animals and humans.

He pulled me out of a quick sand in the Mangrove swamps in the remote areas on Bintan Island during one of our surveys, but not before he took a picture of me trapped in the mud. He saved my life.

If there is a best educational model in the world, I think I know what it is.

ASEAN ASTRONOMY WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS (26-28 Dec 2019)

Organized by the International Science Council (ISC), Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), the Asean Astronomy Workshop for Teachers was held from 26-28 Dec 2019 at the University of Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai Johor, Malaysia.

I attended the event and learned a lot about Astronomy Education and networked with teachers in Malaysia and ASEAN countries.

26th IPS Astronomy Retreat (22-25 June 2019)

Listening to the Universe (23 June 2019)
Mr. Tan Hoe Teck

Radiotelescopes are interesting tools that allow us to "hear" into the Universe. A few simple radio telescopes are introduced to the audience with a comparison of the prices and operational frequencies. To conclude the presentation, a radio fox hunting activity was carried out to test the participants' "listening" skills.

Mr. Tan Hoe Teck received his BSc (Hons) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Physics Department. He is a senior Physics teacher in School of Science and Technology, Singapore (SSTS). He received the IPS Cresendas Physics Medal and Prize (2009) for outstanding physics teaching at JC level. Elected Member of Institute of Physics, Singapore (IPS).
